We had tried to view the stained glass at St Mary’s in Whitton last year but at that time the church was closed for restoration. I had, to be honest, forgotten about it and then yesterday the opportunity came for a quick visit. Whitton lies on the slopes of Titterstone Clee, only about 10 minutes drive from Ludlow. It has a handsome small parish church in a quiet church yard and is en-route to nowhere. But . . . it has stained glass designed by Burne-Jones and made by William Morris.
Morris and Burne-Jones had met at Oxford while both studying theology and eventually Burne-Jones (having dropped theology for art) became the principal designer of glass for William Morris’ company and this work can be seen in churches such as Salisbury Cathedral. The Whitton glass is believed to have been a gift to the parish from the owners of Whitton Court circa 1892/3.
