Rolex Oyster Perpetual Air-King Ref. 5500 dated 1964
Opening this week’s newsletter is a fabulous 60 year old Rolex Oyster Air-King which is date stamped for 1964. The watch has a rare variant dial with dagger and Arabic hour indexes, a style often referred to as ‘Explorer’-type. Also notable is the Rolex signature which, like the hour indexes, is raised above the main dial surface rather than printed. Air-Kings with this dial variant also feature distinctive alpha-shaped hands and a centre seconds with leaf-form tail.
This dial design appears to have been produced for only a short period. Over the last 12 years we have sold 4 other examples, three of which have also been date stamped for 1964. The dial is in outstanding condition, retaining a rich lustre to the surface. There are nicks and scratches throughout the steel case and an abrasion to the left side of the lower left lug, all of which we have not had polished in order to retain the sharp shaping of the bezel and lugs.
Tudor Oyster Ref. 4453 circa 1945-50 | Rolex Oyster bracelet
One of the most charming vintage Tudor wristwatches that we’ve handled, this model dates to the mid- to late-1940s. The silvered dial retains an excellent lustre and has raised gilded Arabic hour indexes. There are vibrant blued steel hour and minute hands which contrast with the red centre seconds. It is rare to find this model fitted with a period Rolex Oyster bracelet. The Rolex bracelet was made under licence in England by Watch Accessories Birmingham (whose WAB stamp can be found inside the clasp). The bracelet is in good condition with sprung-form Oyster links which have a good action and remain tight.
Omega Seamaster Ref. 2937 circa 1958
With a 36mm diameter case, this is a large sized vintage Seamaster model. The steel case has a chamfered bezel and long sweeping lugs. To the silvered dial, the distinctive Seamaster logo has the early ‘hook’-form S and is placed directly beneath the Omega signature. The oxidation to the dial is light and even across the surface. This watch retains its original Omega pin buckle.
A very handsome watch with great presence on the wrist, this is the first time we have offered this model for sale.
Omega Ref. 920 hallmarked 1956-57 | 9ct Gold
This Omega wristwatch has a silvered dial with a rich lustre and is fully set with applied gold Arabic numerals. Reference 920 was available with a variety of different dial designs and the model features a classic 9ct yellow gold case with polished chamfered bezel, gently down-turned lugs and flat, snap-on back. The watch retains its original Omega tan leather easel-form presentation case which folds out to form a stand.
Omega de Ville Ref. 111.5085 Full Set sold in 1970 | 9ct Gold
The De Ville Ref.111.5085 is an unusual tonneau-form Omega dress watch. The champagne dial has a vertical satin finish and the gold numerals at the quarters are twin batons with blackened centres which contrast with the slim gold batons at the intervening hours. This watch retains its signed Omega crystal, crown and pin buckle and is accompanied by its original Omega box and guarantee booklet which is stamped by the retailer Reid & Sons Ltd of Blackett Street, Newcastle. Also included with the watch is the receipt of sale from Reid and Sons, which notes the first sale of the watch on 25 March 1970 for £59.10.0.
Omega Ref. 14727 circa 1959
A slim and smart Omega dress watch, this watch is in lovely original condition. The dial retains a rich lustre and the steel case has clean definition to its angles and edges. We have fitted the watch with a new Hirsch strap and the original steel Omega pin buckle. The original Omega branded leather strap is also included with the watch but is in worn condition.
