With the new listings on the website complete, this update kicks off with the West End Watch Co. wristwatch shown above. I’ve long been a fan of these ‘Sowar’ models – the case of this watch was made by Taubert Frères, (also known as F. Borgel) who were one of the first case companies to successfully produce dust and humidity proof cases. In fact they were so skilled, that many of the finest watch companies used their specialist cases for waterproof models – Patek Philippe for their Ref.1463 chronograph for example.
The West End Watch Co. used good quality movements and were one of the first to take advantage of the ‘Incabloc’ shock absorbers to protect their balances. This mid-sized wristwatch, made in circa 1940, is in outstanding condition and comes complete with its original West End Watch presentation box.
Above is a lovely example of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust, Ref. 16030 black dial, made in circa 1978. One of the all time classic Rolex models, this automatic wristwatch has a superb black dial which is in excellent original condition. The 16030 model has a fast date change facility via the first crown setting and is also equipped with a hack feature to assist with time synchronisation. The watch is fitted with a stainless steel Rolex Jubilee bracelet with adjustable folding clasp.
Next is an 18ct yellow gold Omega wristwatch which is hallmarked for 1954. Vintage Omega watches in 18ct gold cases are considerably more unusual than their 9ct gold counterparts. This watch is also fitted with its original Omega pin buckle, which is also hallmarked for the year 1954, and comes complete with its Omega folding presentation case and card outer box.
Two steel Omega models from the 1940s and 1950s have also just been added. The first (shown above left) is an Omega Ref. 2165 which dates to circa 1943. This mid-sized model is rarely seen and the watch has a robust, steel, two-piece case with moulded bezel and screw-down back. The leaf shaped hands are in vibrant blued steel. To its right is a classic Omega model from circa 1958 with a stainless steel case and silvered dial with combination Arabic and faceted triangular numerals.
