The Song of the Nightingale
This book is a beautifully illustrated by Laura Carlin and is an a meta-way a book about the process of illustrating a book. The story revolves around an artist giving colour to a collection of drab animals that inhabit a landscape and natural world that is bright and colourful compared to their own mono-colour existence. The artist gives colour to the insects and gives flamingoes their pink plumage, a mandrill gets its trademark colourful backside by sitting on the paintbox.
Just as the artist is packing up for the day a bird flies out of the forest waiting to see what colour the artist decides to paint it: the nightingale.
