Steel Tudor / Rolex Prince Oysterdate Submariner ‘Snowflake’ Ref. 94110, circa 1978

A stainless steel automatic centre seconds diver’s wristwatch with hack feature, date and bracelet

The so-called Submariner ‘Snowflake’ is one of the most iconic and coveted of Tudor’s vintage production and takes its ‘Snowflake’ name from the unusually shaped square hour markers and hands. The present watch is a great example of the reference 94110 with a very attractive deep blue dial which is in superb condition. The bi-directional bezel has a blue insert calibrated to 60 minutes; when the triangle on the bezel is rotated to same position as the minute hand, the wearer can use it to measure time elapsed for a period up to one hour. The watch has its original model 9315 Oyster bracelet with twin-lock Rolex clasp and patented diver’s extension piece, the satin finished riveted links are slightly stretched from use. The calibre 2784 movement is automatically wound and has provision for fast date adjustment via the crown and hack feature to enable accurate time adjustment.

The Tudor Submariner takes many of its design elements from the Rolex Submariner, from fonts and calibrations to the Rolex Oyster case with ‘Triplock’ and the diver’s Rolex Oyster bracelet with twin-lock clasp. However, the square markers and unusual hands give the ‘Snowflake’ its own unique identity. The first Tudor Submariner was created in 1954, coinciding with the introduction of the Rolex Submariner which was officially launched in the same year at the Basel Fair. In 1968, Tudor introduced two new Submariner models, references 7016 and 7021, the latter of which had a date aperture. These two models became the first to be made available with the ‘Snowflake’ dial/hands. The present watch is a reference 94110 which was first introduced around 1976 and featured the ‘Snowflake’ design until circa 1980, when the styling of the dial was altered. A lavishly illustrated history of the Tudor Submariner can be found in Isnardi, A., Tudor Anthology, 2013, pp.4-123 where copies of original advertisements for this and other models can be found.
