Tissot Sideral fiberglass, rubber and steel diver’s vintage wristwatch, circa 1970
An unusual fiberglass diver’s style wristwatch with two-tone dial, steel bi-directional bezel and original rubber strap, with Tissot presentation case and booklet
At the end of the 1960s, Tissot introduced a range of fibreglass models within their ‘Sideral’ range. Marketed as youthful and sporty models, contemporary Tissot advertising material explained that “The novelty and originality of the watch results from the ultramodern design of its case” [Translated from a 1969 Spanish language Tissot catalogue]. Tissot emphasised the attributes of fibreglass, explaining that the material was not susceptible to ageing, deforming or rusting and that it was impermeable and had excellent resistance against shocks. A trailblazing design, the use of fibreglass foreshadowed the use of plastics in watches that would, in tandem with the wider use of quartz movements, revolutionise watch design right into the 1980s, bringing down prices and increasing the watch’s mass market appeal.
The present watch is in excellent original condition, retaining its factory rubber strap. The strap is designed for use without keeps, both the buckle and tongue ends of the strap having nodules that fit into the holes of the strap to secure the watch on the wrist. The stainless steel, bi-directional bezel is calibrated for 60 minutes and can be used to mark time elapsed; by advancing the triangular marker to the minute hand, up to 60 minutes of time elapsed can be read off the bezel’s calibrations. Designed for use whilst diving to keep track of the amount of time spent underwater, this would originally have been designed for use whilst diving. PLEASE NOTE that due to the watch’s age, it is no longer waterproof and should not be immersed in water. Automatically wound, the movement incorporates a hack feature – when the crown is pulled out to adjust the time, the second hand temporarily stops to allow accurate synchronisation to a time signal, when the crown is pushed back in, the seconds immediately restart. The date will change each day around midnight but can also be manually advanced by moving the hands repeatedly backwards and forwards between 9pm and 2am.
This watch is accompanied by a blue Tissot presentation case and an instruction booklet.
