Tissot Seastar Chronograph Ref. 40508 -1 steel vintage wristwatch, circa 1969

A stainless steel manually wound tonneau-form chronograph wristwatch with register, tachymeter and Tissot presentation box

With sporty styling and a characterful dial, this Tissot wristwatch dates to the end of the 1960s. The black dial has a finely speckled, semi-matt finish and white contrasting subsidiary dials for constant or subsidiary seconds to the left and, to the right, the chronograph’s minute register. Calibrated for 30 minutes, the right hand counter has its first five minute division highlighted in blue – this was a popular form of calibration on Yachting chronographs to help delineate the five minute period after the starting gun is fired during regattas, before a second gun is fired exactly five minutes later to indicate the moment a boat may cross the starting line. The white baton hands have luminescent panels and the minute hand has an extended ‘syringe’ tip. Cased in stainless steel, the main body is made from a single piece of stainless steel which curves downwards towards the lugs – to accommodate the flat black tachymeter bezel, the bezel itself is slightly recessed around the 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock positions whilst being slightly raised as it crosses between the lugs. As a consequence, the exposed area of the bezel at the edges by 12 and 6 o’clock are rubbed whilst the recessed sections remain crisp and clean.

This watch is powered by Lemania’s calibre 1277 (known within Tissot’s parts catalogues as the Tissot calibre 872). Tissot’s relationship with Lemania stretched back to 1932 when the specialist chronograph manufacturer joined the SSIH (Société Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogere SA) which Tissot had joined two years previously. Lemania supplied chornograph calibres to a variety of Swiss makers including Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet and Omega.

Accompanied by a light blue Tissot presentation box.
