The Pencil – Alan Ahlberg & Bruce Ingman
This is the 10th Anniversary edition of a contemporary classic children’s book written by Allan Ahlberg and illustrated by Bruce Ingman.
The book starts with a “A pencil, a lonely little pencil, and nothing else . . . . one day that pencil made a move, shivered slightly, quivered somewhat … and began to draw.”
In order to bring colour to the world that it is drawing the pencil draws a paintbrush and then in order to correct some of the features that the drawings are not happy with (big ears, ridiculous trainers) the pencil draws a rubber. But the unleashing of a rubber creates havoc and the rubber tries to destroy everything that the pencil has created.
“Few picture books today offer such subtle, imaginative, funny, thought-provoking fare.” The Guardian
