Underworlds – Stephen Ellcock

Stephen Ellcock is a collector or visual ephemera. In this book he plunges the reader into a visual journey to the underbelly of everything. There are depictions o underground ecosystems, burial chambers and subterranean structures. There are hellscapes, surrealist dreamscapes and imageery that emanates fom the depths of the subconscious.

Ellcock’s talent reveals itself in both the collection of images and the juxtaposition of one image with another. The Roman crypt captured in a photograph from 1875-79 is put next to a photograph of a shell grotto in Margate taken in 2011, a photograph of an underwater diver wearing a heavy metal mask and taken in 1899 is next to a picture of a freediver in Mexico taken in 2018.

Hardback. 256 pages.
