The Mr Porter Guide to a Better Day
The subtitle to this book reads ‘A dawn-to-dusk manual for living effortlessly and elegantly in the modern world’.
Living effortlessly and elegantly might be beyond most of us given the current maelstrom of circumstances that afflict our every day lives but there are still guidance notes in here that apply and will continue to apply when Covid-19 is less prevalent. Some of the instruction and writing is knowingly witty; it starts with a brief rundown through the ways that various celebrities have started their waking day: the breakfast sandwich that Elvis Presley developed a taste for, Benzedrine and the Times crossword for W. H. Auden, fruity pebbles for Lebron James.
The book then moves through exercise, a well stocked bathroom cabinet, smarter working care of an interview with Virgil Abloh and ways to practice self care and how to successfully chill out. There are also recipes gleaned from what top chefs eat at home and guidelines for how to appear wise in a meeting: do say “It’s great, but is it scalable?” don’t say Sorry, I zoned out for a second.”
