Making Living Lovely – Russell Whitehead & Jordan Cluroe

There is something approaching a mantra in the introduction to this book in that its aim is to let the reader live in “a wonderful space” and that the process of realizing it “comes back to the same things: bravery, openness and giving yourself the freedom to create.”

They acknowledge through the book that the bombardment of images of inspirational interiors and houses can get too much and that comparing your spaces to those that you see in magazines or on instagram can be the death of creativity. They posit that asking key questions of yourself “How do I want to live? What do I need around me? What gives me decorative joy?” can you lead you to a considered response to your living spaces.

There are no hard and fast rules to their message but they do think that coming up with three different responses for each room to a set of issues, they call this the interior roadmap – three colours, three materials, three functions, three feelings – can help you come up with a scheme that works for you.

As well as illustrating some projects that they have worked on they also call on a group of other interior designers and ask them what their responses would be to the interior roadmap question and what home means to them.
