Jeweled Splendours of the Art Deco Age
If you can get past the Americanised spelling of Jewelled then this book is a true treasure trove. It features works in the collection of The Price and Princess Sadruddin Aga Khan. It is tempting to think of the work by Cartier, Van Cleef etc as gaudy but the craftsmanship involved in the creation of the pieces is extraordinary. The collection features pieces from the Art Deco era such as cigarette cases by Val Cleef and Arpels, vanity Cases by cartier, Boucheron and Lacloche Freres as well as clocks and watches by Cartier.
The materials used in these pieces were of exceptional raw quality before these expert jewellers got their hands on them. Some of the pieces are astounding such as the cigarette case dating from 1920 and carved from rock crystal and studded with rubies. Alongside the fantastic photographs of the collection are texts that put the pieces in context; how they were made, the rivalries of the various jewellers and the derivation of the designs and motifs.
