Botanical Sketchbooks – Helen & William Bynum
This book is an anthology of botanical drawing and sketching; some of it by people interested solely in the capturing of detail, growing habits, etc and some of them people interested in the use of flowers and plants in art. Among the latter there are works by da Vinci, Rennie Mackintosh and Dürer.
The book is split into sections according to the manner of the work that the artists were making, or rather their intention in making the work. The first section of the book is dedicated to the work of adventurers; the plant hunters who set out to document the species of plants that were new to their eyes and also to the eyes of those in their home nations. There is also a section called Botany on the Side which covers botanical drawings made in pre-existing books about plants where the rather dry text which catalogues various plants has been illustrated by hand to give a visual impression of the plant described in the text. As a whole the book presents a catalogue of superb and beautiful botanical sketching and illustration.
