Staffordshire Spill Vase
We have two of these Staffordshire spill vases featuring spaniels. As with all hand decorated pieces there are individual differences between each of the pieces where the final hand decoration has been applied by either a different hand or, more likely, the same hand but just with small differences. It is the hand painted nature of Staffordshire flatbacks that give them much of their character. These would originally have been made to sit on a mantelpiece and hold spills with which to light your fire.
Because they were meant to sit against a wall the reverse of the pieces is unadorned and in fact in places on these two you can see how little care was given to the reverse as the coloured glaze from the front has run in places down the back and they haven’t bothered to tidy it up.
One of the dogs is slightly damaged (but only visible on the reverse). Dog No. 1 has a slight chip to the reverse of the spill holder opening and also has a patch on the reverse where a dark colour has run down the vase and highlighted the crazing on the surface. Otherwise both pieces are in good condition.
