Description
Staffordshire Flatbacks – Highland Figures
These two figures are each dressed in highland garb; one carries a lyre and the other has ring form object in each hand which may be a decorative element to her outfit – to go alongside highland dancing – or maybe a musical instrument such as a tambourine.
These pieces would have been made in Staffordshire at the end of the 19th Century. The decoration of the pieces would all have been applied by hand. Young women or girls were often employed to decorate these pieces and proved their skills on such pieces before advancing to more complex wares.
