Stack Building, Malvern Hills – Laura Knight
Dame Laura Knight was an English landscape and figurative painter. She was born in Nottingham and studied at the city art school in 1900 where she met fellow student Harold Knight. They married in 1903 and moved to Staithes in East Yorkshire where there was an exisiting artists’ colony. They subsequently moved to Penwith to another hot spot for artsist, Newlyn.
The period in which she lived and worked in Worcestershire was 1931-1961. Her success in the male-dominated British art establishment was relatively radical. Her retrospective at the Royal Academy in 1965 was the first for a woman.
