Steel Rolex Oyster Royal Ref. 6144 vintage wristwatch, circa 1951

A stainless steel manually wound centre seconds wristwatch with patented Rolex Super Oyster crown

This is a handsome Rolex Oyster dating to circa 1951. The watch has a Rolex ‘Super Oyster’ crown which the company experimented with for a very short period of time in the early 1950s. Since their introduction in 1926, standard Oyster crowns had been designed to screw-down to the watch case to produce a watertight seal. The ‘Super Oyster’ crown differed from the standard Oyster crown by not being screwed down and, whilst it was still designed to be water-resistant, it could be used like any standard winder without the need to unscrew it first. After a short period of production, Rolex decided to phase out the Super Oyster and only use their screw-down Oyster crown design. Super Oyster crowns are rarely found today, indeed, many of the originals were historically replaced with screw-down crowns during routine servicing.

The watch has a classic silvered dial with raised, pointed baton indexes and feuille (leaf-shaped) hands which contrast with the blued steel of the centre seconds hand. The outer black track is calibrated for 1/5ths of a second. There are some light scuffs to the dial’s surface.

The movement of this watch incorporates the Rolex ‘Superbalance’ that was first patented in 1935 under Swiss Patent number 188077. The ‘Superbalance’ was designed by Rolex to be more streamlined than the traditional compensation balances and was also heavier to help improve accuracy.

Rolex 10.5”’ hunter manually wound movement, lever escapement, 15 jewels, patented Rolex ‘Superbalance’, 18,000BPH; silvered dial, raised gold coloured pointed baton indexes and feuille hands, blued steel centre seconds; stainless steel Rolex Oyster case with patented ‘Super Oyster’ crown and screw-down case back; case, dial, movement and crown signed.
