Reference 1002 was first introduced in 1962 and this is an early example which is year stamped 1963, both to the inside case back and bracelet clasp. The watch is accompanied by its numbered Chronometer testing papers issued on 26 September 1963, guarantee booklet detailing original sale on 1 February 1964, and presentation box.

This version of the Ref. 1002 has a satin finished silvered dial with long baton indexes and dauphine hands. The dial retains a good lustre and there is light oxidation to the surface as well as a surface spot between 1 and 2 o’clock beneath the ‘Perpetual’ script; there is also a very feint scratch beneath the hands. The case has been re-polished in the past and there is a small indentation to the bezel just beside the crown. The bracelet has some stretch and there is some loosening to the links – the current maximum bracelet length is 180mm and there is a spare link which, if riveted onto the bracelet, will increase the overall length to 190mm. If preferred, the bracelet can be detached and the watch worn with a leather strap. The green sarcophagus Rolex box has a wooden lined interior but is lacking the inner stand that would originally have held the watch for display.
