Record Datofix steel & chrome vintage wristwatch, circa 1950

A superb steel backed triple calendar manually wound wristwatch with two-tone dial, moon-phases and original strap

This ‘Datofix’ model is in outstanding condition and appears to have been only lightly used. The stunning two-tone dial is exceptional, with clear two-toning and an excellent lustre. There are finely finely engine-turned subsidiary dials for days, months and constant seconds and the date is shown calibrated in blue at the edge of the dial upon a higher sheen background. Record’s attention to detail in the design of the dial is such that the stem of the central red tipped date hand has been finished in the same silvered finish as the dial centre. The watch is fitted with its original stitched leather strap and pin buckle.

In the early 1950s, Record were one of the few independent watch manufacturers to have developed their own in-house movement calibre with the combined complications of day/date/month/moon indication. Indeed, B. Humbert, in his text book “Modern Calendar Watches” (2nd Ed, 1954) lists only 8 independent watchmakers producing their own triple calendars, moon-phase calibres in 1954; among the 8 listed, Humbert cites Record, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, Omega and Jaeger-LeCoultre. See also further discussion in Kahlert, Muhe and Brunner “Wristwatches, History of a Century’s Development” Schiffer Publishing 5th Edition, 2005, p.83.

The ‘Datofix’ model was listed by Record in 1949 and was advertised in the same year. The company exhibited their calendar watches with moon-phases at the Basel Watch Fair in both 1949 and 1950 (see Pritchard, K, Swiss Timepiece Makers 1775-1975, Phoenix Publishing, 1997, p.R-13.) The Datofix is especially unusual for its placement of the moon-phases at 12 o’clock rather than the traditional position of 6 o’clock that is more commonly found on the dials of other watchmakers.

The Record Watch Company was originally founded in Tramelan, Switzerland, in 1903, its headquarters were moved to Geneva in 1924. In 1961, a majority interest in the Record Watch Company was bought by Longines.
