Esther’s Notebooks: Tales from my ten-year old life – Riad Sattouf

Riad Sattouf is a French cartoonist and illustrator whose long running series, Esther’s Notebooks, has sold over 1 million copies in his native country, and has also been made into an animated TV series. While Esther, and Sattouf’s drawing of her might look cute, the reader shouldn’t be fooled by this the cartoon strips say much of what it is to be a girl in a European city in the 21st Century. Sattouf based these works on conversations with the daughter of a friend and takes these conversations seriously, we learn of her favourite smell (a new iPhone box) and also of the low level racism and sexual harassment of the school playground.

There is normally a neat punchline to each story but the whole comes together to provide a neat portrait of a generation. As the Guardian review of this book notes it is a but like an animated version of the landmark TV series Up, and that it should be read by parents and children alike.

There are 52 strips in this book, one for each week and managing the cross over of Esther from 9 years old to 10 years old.

Paperback. 54 pages.
