Hey You! – Dapo Adeola
Dapo Adeola has become a significant voice in children’s book illustration in the past few years and he uses the platform that he has gained to pass forward that platform to other contemporary black illustrators.
The whole book is an empowering celebration of growing up black. Adeola has written the whole book and in the introduction he acknowledges that the book grew out of an emotional response to the events of 2020; the tragic story of George Floyd and the global awakening to structural racism. His editor asked him when he ‘first . . . . felt empowered as a Black person?’ By acknowledging that Adeola didn’t feel this until he was in his late twenties he decided to write a book that encouraged much younger people to feel that way.
If this makes the book sound preachy it isn’t. It is entirely joyful.
