Field Work – Bella Bathurst
The life of a farmer is explored in this book by Bella Bathurst. We think we know what makes Britain’s countryside: drystone walls, stiles, sheep on a distant hillside but, Bathurst says, we know little of the farmers themselves.
From fruit farmers to allen stock operators, from grassy, idyllic uplands, to polytunnels, she creates a portrait of modern Britain, exposing in the process the inextricable bonds that exist between the land and the people who farm it. Her portrait also reveals the balance that British farmers and farming are trying to strike between time-honoured methods and modern appetites.
