Original Bauhaus Workbook
This book is a companion piece to the exhibition original bauhaus (and catalogue for that exhibition) that is running at the Berlinische Galerie. This title introduces the exercises of the Bauhaus preliminary course and asks to what extent the methods developed back then when the Bauhaus was still active, could still be effective in arts education today.
There are 50 historical course exercises in the book which invite the reader to explore the Bauhaus cosmos and experience the freedom of an unfettered imagination in learning, practising and experimenting.
The introductory course was created by Johannes Itten in the same year that the Bauhaus was founded (1919) and only after the students had completed these initial classes was their way open to access training in the workshops. As well as the exercises devised by Itten there are others by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Josef Albers.
A good gift for anyone interested in graphic design and the visual arts.
