This is Hollinghurst’s first novel since 2017s The Sparsholt Affair. This new book gives a portrait of modern England through the lens of one man’s acutely observed and often unnerving experience. Our protagonist is Dave Win and this is his account of his life as a schoolboy and student, his time on the road with an experimental theatre company and of a late-life affair which transforms his sixties with a new sense of happiness but also perilous security.

Perhaps the standout relationship is prehaps that between Dave Win and his widowed mother, whose live takes a new turn after her son leaves home.
