Gold Patek Philippe Ref. 2449 vintage wristwatch made in 1954 & sold in 1955
A very fine and rare 18ct yellow gold manually wound wristwatch with Patek Philippe strap, original gold buckle and an Extract from the Archives
Patek Philippe introduced reference 2449 in 1948 and the model remained in production for only 6 years, with the final examples made in 1954. Reference 2449 is large for the period of its production with a case diameter of 35mm. The wonderfully classic design of the case is clearly inspired by the original and iconic Calatrava models: Ref. 96 and Ref. 570. Interestingly, the so-called ‘over-sized’ Calatrava, reference 570, has a similar diameter to the Ref. 2449 and whilst some of the 570’s style elements are shared with the present watch, the 2449 has a number of marked differences. The case of the 2449 is composed in two parts with a single upper body and snap-on case back; its bezel is flat and broad – considerably more so than the over-sized Ref. 570’s – giving the watch a bold and imposing look, the lugs are thick and are not drilled to their outer edges as one finds on the Calatrava references 96 and 570. The large winding crown is slightly recessed into the case side. All this allows a sinuous flow across the case sides from lug to lug. Originally sold in France, this watch has French import hallmarks to the outside back which remain wonderfully crisp, illustrating the excellent state of preservation.
The dial of this watch is in lovely original condition with the tracking and signature engraved into the dial plate and fired with black enamel paint. The applied gold numerals have flat surfaces with very slight chamfers to their edges. The gold hands are centrally faceted with short stems towards their bases, a design used by Patek Philippe on a few select models during the 1950s. Manually wound, the extremely fine movement is a Patek Philippe calibre 12-400 which has an exceptional, damascened finished backplate and is stamped twice with the Geneva seal.
This watch has gold spring bars and has been fitted with a new Patek Philippe strap which is set with the original 18ct yellow gold Patek Philippe buckle. The buckle, like the watch’s case, has French import hallmarks.
