Gold Patek Philippe ‘Flame Lugs’ Ref. 2431 vintage wristwatch, made in 1950

A very fine and impressive 18ct yellow gold manually wound wristwatch with flame-form lugs

The so-called ‘Flame Lug’ Patek Philippe, ref. 2431, features one of the most sculptural case designs ever used by the company. Originally introduced in 1948, the model’s 18ct gold case has substantial stepped and flared lugs which create a bold and imposing design. Without doubt, the design is one of Patek Philippe’s most iconic from the period and the heavy gold case lends the watch an impressive weight. An archival image of this reference is illustrated in Huber, M and Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Wristwatches, Second Edition, pl.264, p.171. The movement is a Patek Philippe manually wound calibre 12’’’-120 with beautifully finished ‘Geneva Striped’ plates, 18 jewels and precision regulation.

In wonderful overall condition, the casing retains superb definition with deep hallmarking still clearly visible to the case side and underside of the lugs. Indeed, a comparison to the archival image of this model, illustrated in the aforementioned Huber/Banbery book, demonstrates how well preserved this example is. The striking silvered dial has applied gold numerals and a large subsidiary seconds dial. The watch is fitted with a replacement Patek Philippe leather strap and 18ct gold Patek Philippe buckle.

Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives, confirming production of this wristwatch in 1950 and original sale in 1951.
