Pair of Staffordshire Flatbacks – Children with Goats

If ever you were in doubt about the charm and character of Staffordshire flatback pieces then this pair of children sitting on goats will set you right!

The goats appear pretty non-committal about the situation but you get the impression that they may just be biding their time until they buck their riders from them.

The main form of each piece would have been made in a mould (at some point towards the end of the 19tj Century) and further decoration of extruded clay would have been attached to the raw clay body to create the fur and beards of the goats. This decorative clay was achieved by simply pushing wet clay through a sieve like structure.

After their initial firing the pieces were then decorated by hand with all of the additions of detail.

A handsome pair of Staffordshire figures in great condition.
