November 11 1947 (Mousehole) – Ben Nicholson
This card features a work by Ben Nicholson (1894-1982) that takes its title from the date, just two years after the end of World War II. Nicholson had moved to Cornwall in 1939 with Barbara Hepworth and they lived together in St Ives on the north coast. The distinctive harbour of Mousehole (on the south coast) as well the isle of St Clements which sits outside of the harbour walls can be seen in his painting.
Nicholson attended the Slade School of Fine Art where he was a contemporary of Paul Nash and Stanley Spencer. His first marriage was to Winifred Nicholson.
