Steel Omega ‘Non-Magnetic’ Ref. 2317 vintage wristwatch, circa 1944

A rare stainless steel wristwatch with two-tone dial and tumbling Arabic numerals, Omega card box and swing tag

This is a very handsome wristwatch with a stunning dial that has aged beautifully, with a warm patina and even oxidation. The steel case is large for the period of production, measuring 35mm, yet the bezel is very narrow, thereby accentuating the dial by allowing it the maximum surface area. The chapter ring carries ‘tumbling’ Arabic numerals which are finished in a gilt foil, whilst the enlarged, engine-turned, subsidiary seconds dial dominates the lower half of the dial. Beneath the Omega signature, the dial is marked ‘Non-Magnetic’, an unusual detail and, at the time of the watch’s production, an important marketing angle. The effects of magnetism on watch movements had long challenged watchmakers and research into and development of anti-magnetic components and alloys was at the forefront of horological developments in the 1940s and 1950s. Indeed, models such as the Ingenieur by IWC and the Milgauss by Rolex, both of which were launched in the 1950s, were specifically designed to resist strong magnetic fields and were aimed at the scientific and engineering community.

Reference 2317 was introduced by Omega in 1943. This watch is accompanied by a card Omega presentation box and Omega swing tag. The watch is fitted with a new Hirsch leather strap with a modern steel Omega pin buckle.
