Movado Sport Ref. 11509 steel vintage wristwatch, circa 1945
A steel mid-sized manually wound wristwatch with two-tone dial
The two-tone dial of this watch has a great vintage look with a uniquely oxidised surface. Tarnished areas of the dial have developed warm, pinkish hues which contrast with the silvery base tone of the dial. The chapter ring which carries the black Arabic numerals has a higher sheen finish which clearly delineates it from the dial’s centre.
The unpolished steel case has light scuffs and scratches, retaining good definition to the multi-faceted lugs and vertically satin finished case sides. For the construction of the case, Movado turned to the specialist watch case making company Taubert & Fils. From the late 19th Century, when it existed under the name Frères Borgel, Taubert & Fils was one of the finest Geneva based case makers and specialists in the manufacture of high quality dirt and moisture-resistant cases. The company’s case stamp was F.B. within a cartouche this is stamped to the upper left hand side of the inside case back of this watch. Borgel cases are of exceptional quality and were used by some of the finest makers, including Patek Philippe, for whom Taubert famously supplied the superb screw-back case for the chronograph reference, 1463.
