Movado Ermeto Chronomètre steel and leather purse watch, circa 1930

A steel, chromium plated and leather covered purse watch with ‘automatic’ winding covers

An early version of the Ermeto, this travelling watch incorporates Movado’s ingenious ‘automatic’ case winding system that was patented in 1928. As the sliding covers are opened and closed, a pinion on the winding stem is engaged, which automatically turns the winding crown and winds the watch. An ingenious piece of horological engineering, each opening and closing of the case was designed to provide 4 hours of running time, therefore, the user was only required to open their watch 6 times a day to power it for 24 hours. The Ermeto was designed to be used with or without a chain and could simply be placed in a pocket or bag.

Over the years, the Ermeto was made with a variety of different case and dial designs and became one of the company’s most recognised and iconic pieces. Interestingly, Andy Warhol, who was a great fan of Movado, owned at least 6 different versions of the Ermeto from a wide range of periods. The present example has a very handsome silvered dial with the Arabic hour indexes and dot minute track all raised above the surface.
