Steel Longines Ref. 2443 retailed by T.S. Cuthbert, Glasgow, vintage wristwatch circa 1939

A rare mid-size stainless steel manually wound wristwatch

The distinctive steel case of this wristwatch, with thick sides and unusual twin stepped flat bezel, was a design that Longines incorporated into a few different models in the late 1930s and early 1940s, these included both time-only and chronograph models. Despite its modest size (30mm diameter), the thickness and solidity of the case create a bold look and give the watch a surprising weight.

The present reference 2443 is very similar in design to the larger Longines reference 2484. An example of the 2484 is illustrated in John Goldberger’s excellent book “Longines Watches” published by Damiani in 2006, see pp.112 & 113 [this book is available from Black Bough]. It is interesting to compare the published watch with the present Ref. 2443. The styling of the case and crown of these two watches is almost identical to one another, albeit on a different scale and the outside case backs are engraved with the same written information and shaped cut-outs for removing the case back. This Ref. 2443 uses the Longines calibre 10.68Z whilst the Ref. 2484 used the larger but identically styled calibre 12.68Z.

This wristwatch is in great condition for its age. The silvered dial is in good original condition with a lovely patina that is rich and even in colour. Interestingly, the numeral at 12 o’clock is picked out in red, a stylistic hangover from dial designs of the 1910s and 1920s. This use of red combined with the blued steel of the hands give the watch an added vibrancy. The Longines signature is placed above the subsidiary seconds dial and the retailer’s name of T. S. Cuthbert is given prominence at the top of the dial; T. S. Cuthbert were both retailers and watchmakers/repairers based in Glasgow.
