Leather Single Watch Pouch made in England

Steel International Watch Co. vintage wristwatch, circa 1942

A fine and rare stainless steel manually wound wristwatch

This is a rare and very attractive wristwatch with a large case diameter for the period of production, measuring 35mm in diameter. The watch has a superb silvered dial with raised pink gold coloured numerals and feuille hands, as well as a large and finely engine-turned subsidiary seconds dial. The dial is in lovely condition with very light and even oxidation to the surface. By utilising a slim bezel, the dial surface is maximised which not only increases its clarity, but visually enhances the size of the watch itself.

The design of the dial is strikingly similar to one of the dial designs used on the iconic vintage Portuguese model (Ref 325). In 1993, to mark the 125th anniversary of IWC, the Schaffhausen based watchmaker released a new Portuguese model, Ref. 5441, that paid hommage to the original and whose dials were stylistically almost identical to the present wristwatch – for a comparison see: Sotheby’s Geneva, 13th May 2015, lot 254. During the period this watch was made, many IWC watches (of varying models) were imported into Portugal and the laws at that time required steel cased watches, in addition to precious metal cases, to be hallmarked to prove that relevant taxes had been paid. In steel watches this was usually applied to the front of the upper left lug, as can be seen in the present watch.

Please note that this watch has been fully serviced and overhauled and is running reliably but, due to its age, the timekeeping is outside our usual expected tolerances for timekeeping and variations of a couple of minutes per day should be expected.
