Description
In The Sun Newlyn, c.1910 – Laura Knight
Newlyn is a fishing village and port that sits just to the west of Penzance. In the early 20th Century it became a hub for artists and this in turn led to the recognition of the Newlyn School of Artists. You can see the long main pier of the village in the background of this painting with Penzance beyond that. The figures in the foreground are in the fields above Newlyn.
This piece was painted in c. 1910.
Knight was born in Nottingham and studied at the art school there. She met Harold Knight there in 1900 and they married three years later. They then moved to Staithes in Yorkshire and subsequent to that to Newlyn in Cornwall.
