Less – Patrick Grant

Patrick Grant has achieved widespread recognition via his role as a judge on The Great British Sewing Bee which has just started its tenth series on the BBC.

His reason for being invited to takle up that role was largely based on his work with the Savile Row tailors Norton & Son which he took over the running of in 2005. His understanding of the craftmanship that that particular business was founded on was learnt on the job and through that he developed a greater understanding of the loss of skills (in the UK) that has accompanied the rise and rise of fast (cheap and disposable) fashion.

Grant posits the idea that we have lost the concept of caring for our clothes. We (largely) no longer care where they are made and who makes them and have therefore stopped looking after our clothes in the way that we once did. Grant considers the crisis of consumption and quality in fashion, and how we might make ourselves happier by rediscovering the joy of living with fewer, better-quality things.
