The View from Federal Twist – James Golden
Federal Twist is a naturalistic garden with a difference. Set in a clearing in the woods of western New Jersey, it is a triumph of ecological planting and fearless design. James Golden is the owner, designer and gardener. He describes how he listened to the site, made a conscious decision not to improve the land, planted large, competitive plants into rough grasses, and watched and waited as sustainable plant communities emerged.
In his introduction Thomas Rainer writes ‘The story of Federal Twist is remarkable for both the gardener and the garden. James Golden was a white-collar worker in New York who went to the woods of western New Jersey to make a garden. His ambition was great, his site was terrible . . . he turned these stresses into assets.’
