Eterna steel vintage wristwatch, circa 1946

A very handsome steel automatic wristwatch with two-tone dial

Eterna released their first automatic calibre (cal. 834) in 1938. The movement in the present watch is the watchmaker’s 1076H automatic calibre which was put into production in c. 1944. A ‘bumper’ automatic calibre, the movement has a weighted semi-rotor which activates the winding system as it buffers back and forth off two coiled springs. In lovely condition, the two-tone silvered dial has a rich lustre and stylish combination hour indexes outlined in black and highlighted with gold foil. The steel case retains excellent definition with crisp definition to its angles and edges. The watch is in unpolished condition and there are light scuffs to the surface and there is light oxidation spotting to the dial’s surface.

Eterna’s history goes back to 1856 when the company was founded in Grenchen under the name “Girard & Schild”. The company has a long and rich history and most notably founded the famous ebauches maker ETA. When Ebauches SA was formed in 1932, Eterna was split into two companies: Eterna S.A. for the production of precision wristwatches and ETA S.A. for the manufacture of ebauches, as an affiliate of Ebauches SA.
