Edward VIII Coronation Jug

This jug was one of a number of pieces made in advance for the coronation that never happened in. 1937 – that of Edward VIII. You can imagine the wrath of the UK pottery industry who must have had warehouses full of commemorative wares, only to learn that the coronation was not to happen. Some of the pieces were adapted for the coronation of George VI but items such as this jug with its moulded 3D depiction of Edward would either have already have been sold to customers or stayed on the shelves of pottery warehouses.

This jug was made by Johnson Bros, it has their printed mark to the underside as well as a stamped mark which says Patent Applied For.

There is one firing fault where a section of the pale blue glaze did not adhere to the underside of the lip of the jug but it is otherwise in good condition.
