Ravilious & Wedgwood – Richard Dennis
This book contains the complete designs that Eric Ravilious made for Wedgwood. The final designs that made it into production have become hugely collectable and this book was first published in 1986 – this most recent publication was made in 2016.
The book contains a short biography of the artist by Richard Dennis which tells of how his involvement with the potter firm came to fruition by the Head of Design at Wedgwood, Victor Skellern, who had known Ravilious at the Royal College of Art. Skellern was able to enthuse the Wedgwood family and commission trial drawings from Ravilious.
The first designs that made it into production were described by a trade gazette as being “ahead of its time” which is another way of saying that his designs were of an unusual imaginative quality that hadn’t previously been brought to the world of ceramics.
This book includes the iconic Boat Race Day, Garden Implements, Travel and Alphabet designs, some of which have been reissued by Wedgwood. Beyond the colour plates each design is described further and the backstamps used no each piece are catalogued.
