Coronation Beaker – 1937
This ceramic beaker was made by Maling, a pottery company that was based in the North East of England. Souvenir ware such as this was a staple of many potteries but Maling had had great success in the 19th Century by making marmalade jars and similar. They introduced their decorative wares in 1908.
The coronation of George VI on May 12th 1937 brough an influx of commemorative china and this beaker was one such piece. As well as the transfer marking the occasion of the coronation the beaker has another transfer on the opposite side with the shield of Northumberland County Council education committee.
The beaker was probably commissioned by the council in large numbers to give to school age children.
Nowadays, I’d be inclned to use the beaker as a receptacle for toothbrush and toothpaste or for pens and pencils.
In good condition with no cracks, one small chip to the base.
