Christopher Clarke for Black Bough handmade kangaroo leather watch strap
These exceptional wristwatch straps are handmade using kangaroo tail leather by Christopher Clarke in Shropshire. The straps, which have a highly attractive, natural and distinctive asymmetrical grained surface, are mid brown in tone, whilst the lining, which is also made from thinned kangaroo leather, has a contrasting light pumice colour. The lengths of the strap, buckle and keeps are meticulously sewn by hand using linen thread coated with beeswax. The straps are reinforced at the case ends using carbon fibre.
Kangaroo is very strong, due partly to the fibres being nearly parallel to the surface and partly caused by the harsh conditions the animals are exposed to, the skin being very low in fat which causes few voids during the tanning process, making the leather dense. All the grain on the surface of the leathers is the natural texture of the skin. Kangaroo leather’s unique properties and strength have led to its use in the manufacture of motorcycle leathers and boots for the military and sports.
