Handmade in Shropshire using the finest Calf Skin leather, sourced from a Scottish tannery, these wristwatch straps are vegetable tanned. Vegetable tanning is the historic and traditional method of making the leather durable and involves steeping animal skins in a succession of pits filled with tanning liquor, this is derived from natural plant materials such as oak bark, sumac or mimosa. The process can take months or even years and leaves the leather with a slightly open texture which allows the leather to change with age, developing its own patination and suppleness. Today, only around 4% of leather worldwide is tanned in this way.
The buckle and fixed ‘keep’ are hand sewn onto the strap using linen thread coated with beeswax. The straps are reinforced at the case ends using carbon fibre and linen for strength. Kangaroo leather is used for the linings. Kangaroo is very strong, due partly to the fibres being nearly parallel to the surface and partly caused by the harsh conditions the animals are exposed to, the skin being very low in fat which causes few voids during the tanning process, making the leather dense. All the grain on the surface of the different leathers is the natural texture of the skin. Leathers with embossed (artificial) grains are not used.
