Christopher Clarke for Black Bough handmade pig skin leather watch strap with kangaroo lining | 16mm-20mm
Pig skin has a fantastic texture which gives these straps a uniquely rugged appearance. Light tan in colour, the straps have a soft sheen to the surface and are backed with supple kangaroo skin to ensure a comfortable fit. Pig skin was frequently used for making straps for watches right from the early days of wristwatch production and remained popular until the end of the 1960s. Today the use of pig and boar skin for watch straps has greatly diminished, such that it is difficult to find straps made with this leather on the market today. The traditional look of these straps make them ideal for use with vintage wristwatches.
Handmade in Shropshire using the finest pig skin, sourced from a Scottish tannery, these wristwatch straps are vegetable tanned. Vegetable tanning is the historic and traditional method of making the leather durable and involves steeping animal skins in a succession of pits filled with tanning liquor, this is derived from natural plant materials such as oak bark, sumac or mimosa. The process can take months or even years and leaves the leather with a slightly open texture which allows the leather to change with age, developing its own patination and suppleness. Today, only around 4% of leather worldwide is tanned in this way.
The buckle and fixed ‘keep’ are hand sewn onto the strap using linen thread coated with beeswax. The straps are reinforced at the case ends using carbon fibre and linen for strength. Kangaroo leather is used for the linings. Kangaroo is very strong, due partly to the fibres being nearly parallel to the surface and partly caused by the harsh conditions the animals are exposed to, the skin being very low in fat which causes few voids during the tanning process, making the leather dense. All the grain on the surface of the different leathers is the natural texture of the skin. Leathers with embossed (artificial) grains are not used.
Watch our video on how to change a watch strap:
Tongue side: 120mm
Buckle side (excluding buckle) : 80mm
Straps with a lug gauge of 16mm are 5mm shorter: Tongue 115mm, Buckle 75mm
Thickness approx: 1.5 to 2mm
At the lug end of the strap, the width is slightly wider than the lug gauges indicated in order to achieve a tight fit and avoid gaps.
Straps are parallel therefore buckle widths match the lug gauges.
* at the risk of stating the bleedin’ obvious….the watches shown in the photographs are not included!
