The Watchmaker of Filigree Street – Natasha Pulley

Natasha Pulley’s novel follows a character called Thaniel Steepleton who works as a telegraph clerk for the British government at the end of the nineteenth century. He returns to his flat on the evening of his birthday to find a gold pocketwatch on his pillow. Six months after this the watch saves his life by sounding an alarm just minutes before a bomb explodes at Scotland Yard.

This leads Thaniel to search for the maker of his watch, Keita Mori, a Japanese immigrant.

Running concurrently to this strand of the story is that of another character, Grace Carrow, who is trying to prove the existence of a luminferous ether. The three characters gradually become entwined; with Carrow seeing a darker side to Keita Mori than Steepleton does.
