Description
Virol Stoneware Jars
Virol was a well distributed and used product that sounds pretty revolting to modern tastes being described as a “preparation of bone-marrow an ideal fat food for children and invalids.” This is some way from bone marrow and parsley on toast cooked by Fergus Henderson and his restaurant St John in Clerkenwell.
The product was developed by Bovril in 1899 and was originally made in their factory in Old Street, London. In the 1920s they moved production to a larger site in Perivale. The product continued to be made until the 1980s.
These two jars probably date to the 1930s or 40s. They make a great vase for a small posy of flowers – which hopefully will smell sweeter than bone-marrow as well!
