Sylvac Terrier Ornament
One thing this model of a terrier dog is not lacking is personality. The paintwork might have a few losses and the edges of its ears might have been rubbed of their brown colouring in the same way as a threadbare teddy has been cuddled too much, but it undeniably has character.
The dog was made by SylvaC in their factory in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, probably in the 1950s or early 1960s. It is their pattern number reference 1580. I think this example comes from relatively early in the company’s production run of this model. The later examples are much more white and have a glossy glaze whereas this version has a matt biscuity colour base glaze and a soft satin sheen over all. The markings to the base of the model don’t show up particularly well in the photograph but there is an impressed mark for the model number and then just a stamp that says Made in England. There is no separate SylvaC mark.
Aside from the very obvious loss of glaze to patches the dog is in good condition with no cracks.
