Stoneware Penny Ink Bottles

These stoneware ink bottles were commonly known as penny inks as the full bottles of ink were sold for 1p. In order to sell the ink at this price the container (be it glass or stoneware) had to be produced on a mass scale and cheaply. Thus ink bottles such as these were made without any finesse but with charming slapdash variation from each other. The glaze might be uneven, or have run on one piece or might have small air holes in it.

All of these variations add to the character of each piece. They make excellent single bloom vases, particularly useful if you have decapitated a prized rose by mistake and cut the flower head with only a short stem. They can be mixed among other larger size ink bottles in order to give a pleasing difference in scale.
