Staffordshire Figural Shaker

This shaker, or muffineer, was made in Staffordshire probably somewhere between 1850 and 1870. They take a form which is somewhere between Toby Jugs and Flatback Figures – ostensibly they had a use but there is some dispute whether this was for shaking sugar or spices or, indeed, sand . . . in order to dry written ink.

This particular shaker takes the form of a portly figure with a yellow tri corn hat and bright orange trousers, he would have some kind of cork bung undelicately located to his rear which would have allowed the granular substance to be refilled and to stop it from leaking out from anywhere other than the desired shaking holes in his hat.

In good condition with no chips or cracks.
