Staffordshire Figural Group – Couple with Clock Face and Foliage
I think that the plant growing up behind the clockface of the Staffordshire group is supposed to be a vine and that the couple are collecting the grapes. Whereas in other artistic mediums the depiction of a clock or timepiece has great imagistic significance I don’t think that the same can be said for 19th Century Staffordshire flatbacks.
There is a firing crack to this piece to the side of the gentleman but this appears to have been contemporary with the manufacturing rather than a result of it being damaged subsequently. There is also minor loss of colour to the greenery.
