Set of 6 Wedgwood Coffee Cups and Saucers – designed by Susie Cooper

Among the list of illustrious names who have been commissioned by Wedgwood over the years (Eric Ravilious, Keith Murray, Jasper Conran) is Susie Cooper.

Born in 1902, Cooper was a prodigious talent. She joined the firm A. E. Gray in 1922 and produced many iconic pattern designs for them. In 1940 she awarded Royal Designer for Industry and was given an OBE in 1979. She was doing her most iconic work in Stoke on Trent at the same time as Clarice Cliff and Charlotte Rhead.

Wedgwood commissioned her to make several designs including this one which is called Keystone. The pattern was produced in this brick red colour and also in green. As well as designing this pattern, Cooper also designed the ‘can’ shape and Wedgwood produced this shape in several of her designs. She worked for the Wedgwood group from 1968-1980 and this keystone pattern probably dates from the 1970s. The white part of the cups and saucers has a gloss glaze but the red section is matt.

There are 6 coffee cups and accompanying saucers in the set. All are in good condition with no chips or cracks. One of the saucers has some light splatter marks on it, which I would hazard a guess, are from some doing some decorating in the vicinity and not using a dust sheet! The marks are shown in the last photograph.
